The City's Recreation Department is responsible for operating the facilities at Purvis Park and implementing all recreation programs. The Recreation Commissioner and the Pool Aquatic Director oversee more than 60 seasonal employees.
Purvis Park, centrally located in University Heights, offers a range of outdoor recreational pursuits.
The park includes an outdoor pool, tennis courts, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, grills and a playground area.
The 10,300 sq. ft. swimming pool includes lap swim lanes, baby play area, 30 ft. high water slide, and 3 meter and 10 meter diving boards.
It is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
During summer months, the City sponsors a free craft program for children at the Picnic Pavilion. A summertime Story Hour, sponsored by the CH-UH Library, is also held at the Park.
Tennis play is available on the seven courts at Purvis Park and the four courts at Bellefaire. The City sponsors tennis lessons for all ages, an evening tennis league for adults, and participates in local competitive meets.
