2011 Spring Oral Rabies Vaccination Program (ORV) ~ The Ohio departments of Health (ODH) and Natural Resources (ODNR), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services (USDA WS) program and local health departments (LHDs) will begin spring oral rabies vaccination (ORV) operations Monday, May 2, in five northeastern Ohio counties (Lake, Geauga, Cuyahoga, Portage and Summit). Bed Bugs ~ Public health officials and pest control operators across the country are responding to a significant increase in bed bug complaints. Although they are not known to transmit disease, bed bugs can cause a variety of physical and mental health concerns to anyone living with an infestation. They have been found in homes, apartments, office buildings, hospitals, businesses and even movie theaters. The CDC and the USEPA have even declared that the bed bug is now a "pest of significant public health importance." Emerald Ash Borer Program ~ Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus Planipennis), an ash tree-killing insect from Asia, was identified in Ohio in 2003. The department has developed a response plan, battling the pest through detection, regulation, and education to protect the state’s more than 3.8 billion ash trees.
