July 24, 2016 The Grand Opening Celebration of the new University Heights Community Park brought hundreds of community members out to have fun and enjoy the new park. Entertainment at the celebration included Michael Roy’s Cirque du Papier, A World of Magic’s face painter and balloon twister, the University Heights Symphonic Band, Jungle Bob, the Rocket Car, and DrURawesome. We thank the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for their financial assistance with the ADA-accessible playground equipment. The park will now be open from dawn to dusk; we look forward to seeing you there!

June 21, 2016 With the landscaping and bio-retention area planted and the grass seeding tucked under the hay, the park is quickly coming together and nearing completion. The new backstop for the play field has been installed. The parking lot on the east side of the park, off Saybrook Road, has been expanded and repaved, and the monument sign has been erected–look for it when you are looking for where to park. As soon as we have a date that the park will be open, we will be sure to post it to social media and the website–stay tuned!

 June 7, 2016 Construction is going well thanks to the beautiful weather we have had. The gazebo has been erected, but the roofing has yet to been installed. The stone has been installed around the base of the gazebo. The backstop fencing has also been installed. The entry trellis that frames the view of the park from Northwood Road is coming together. The handpump and nature play areas are finished, and ready for the park opening, and one of the adult exercise equipment stations has been assembled.

May 10, 2016 Cast stone is being installed on the restroom building and trellis entry walls. The foundation and stone for the sitting wall around the playground area has also been installed. Work  Bio-Swale areas along Fenwick Road. Work on the gazebo will continue, with the columns and horizontal beams having been installed already.

April 26, 2016 The park construction continues to progress quickly. The restroom facility has seen much work lately with the installation of siding, rough electrical and plumbing, metal roofing, aluminum windows, and the pouring of concrete for a sidewalk around the restroom facility. Work continues on the entry trellis at Fenwick and Northwood Roads with columns already installed and horizontal beams will be installed soon.

April 15, 2016 With the beautiful weather, work is moving along well in the park! The pavers around the entry way along Fenwick Road have been laid and the entry concrete sidewalk have been installed. The restroom room roof and hardboard siding have been installed and is well on its way to being complete. The concrete slab has been poured for the gazebo, and concrete curbing is being installed, and some has already been finished around the playground areas. Additionally, the boardwalk over the bioswale has been completed.

March 22, 2016 Work has begun with the break in the winter weather. With the foundations for the restroom facilities laid in 2015, the steel trusses have been set and is starting to take form. Construction crews are now working on the boardwalk on the western side of the park at the entrance off Fenwick Road. The aggregate base has been placed for the gazebo, and the concrete block foundation has been installed for the seating wall at the playground area. It’s great that the warm weather is back and progress is being made!

December 22, 2015 The final layer of asphalt for the new Fenwick Road parking spaces has been laid, and the ADA ramps at the intersection of Northwood and Fenwick Roads are being installed. Foundations for the picnic pavillion, gazebo and seating walls, and entry trellis have all been completed; the utilities for the restrooms have been installed, and the concrete floor will be poured soon. Finally, 3/4 of the walking trail’s base material has been laid. The nice weather lately has been great for keeping construction on schedule!

December 9, 2015 The first layer of asphalt for the new parking spaces along Fenwick Road has been laid, and the top layer of asphalt will be laid shortly. ADA ramps at the new Fenwick and Northwood Road intersection will also be installed soon. The foundations for the restroom building, picnic pavilion, gazebo, and entry trellis are all in place. The park is really starting to take shape!

November 24, 2015 One lane of traffic is now moving through the new tabled intersection with red-brick-stamped concrete crosswalks. Concrete sidewalks with ADA ramps are ready to be poured on the west side of the intersection. The curbs and sidewalks around the new parking spots have been poured, and one cable company pole needs to be removed before asphalt for the parking can be poured. Excavation for the restrooms and the trellis at the Fenwick Road entrance is taking place. The park progress is still on schedule!

November 10, 2015 The tabling of the intersection at Fenwick and Northwood Roads is proceeding on schedule, and could be open as soon as November 26, 2015, thanks to the beautiful weather lately. The contractors continue to work on underground utility work across the park. Also, several electric and/or cable poles have been relocated or removed, making way for parking and park amenities. Look forward to new pictures and updates coming soon!

October 15, 2015 On Monday, October 19, 2015 Fenwick Road at Northwood Road will be closed and impassable so that construction crews can perform roadwork for drainage and pedestrian safety improvements. Read more in the letter from Service Director Pokorny and a detour map. Crews are working on underground utility work, site grading, and the tabling of the intersection of Fenwick and Northwood Roads currently.

September 29, 2015 Initial sitework has started. Trees and stumps have been removed. The existing sidewalk along Fenwick Road has been removed to make way for the new parking spots and sidewalk. Fence gates to the property from homes have been secured and the existing baseball backstops have been taken down. Let us hope for good weather this fall to keep construction on schedule!

August 26, 2015 On Tuesday, August 25, 2015 City Council approved Cavanaugh Building’s bid to build out the community park. Look out for construction to start soon–pictures will follow! Cleared of all the buildings and debris of the former Northwood Elementary School, the site for the new University Heights community park is ready for construction. City Council unanimously approved the seeking of bids to build playground equipment for 2 age groups, adult exercise equipment, a gazebo, a perimeter walking track, and landscaping. If the weather cooperates, the park could open as early as Spring/Summer 2016. Click here to the see the final concept plan for the new community park!
